Discussion Question 5

ASA,

Discuss how we are to determine the slope of a graph. Also, what two forms of equations representing a graph did we learn in class on Friday? Is understanding slope important when using these forms? Why or why not? Lastly, what does the x-intercept and y-intercept tell us a about a graph?

Due Date: Monday, November 19, 2012 @ 11:59pm.

Don't forget, the correct way to answer your discussion questions are in complete sentences in paragraph form. I did not take off points last discussion question, but I will in the future if you do not answer them in the correct format.

  1. You find the slope of a line by finding the change in Y over the change in X. The to equations we learned were slope-intercept form: y=mx+b and point slope form: y-y1=m(x-x1). Yes, understanding the slope in these two equations are very imperative because you have to know the slope to solve each equation. X-intercept means when the line crosses the x-axis and the y-intercept is when the line crosses the y-axis.

  2. Find the difference of both the y and x coordinates and place them in a ratio. Pick two points on the line, because you are using two sets of ordered pairs both having x and y values, a subscript must be used to distinguish between the two values. It is important because in order to find the y-intercept, you need the slope. The x-intercept are where the graph crosses the y axis and the y-intercept are where the graph crosses the x axis.

  3. To dtermine the slppe of a graph, just use the formula for the rate of change=f(x)/x. In class we learned about the equation for slope which is y=mx+b and we learned about point slope form. Yes, its important because you are supposed to use slope to graph an equation. If you dont know how to do that then you cant graph the equation. the x-intercept tells us that the live crosses it on the x-axis and the y-intercept tells us that the line passess through the y- axis.

  4. to find the slope you must use the formula which is rise over run, so your pretty much finding the change in Y and X. On Friday we learned about Point Slope Form which equals to y-y1=m(x-x) and we learned Slope Intercept Form which equals toy=mx+b. It is highly important to know why you need to calculate the slope because the slope tells the steepness and whether the person or thing was constant ( did they keep going) or did they stop then go.the X-intercept tell us when the slope of a line crossed the x axis and they Y-intercept tell us when the slope of a line crossed the y axis.

  5. In order to find the slope of a graph you have to use several different formulas to determine your slope. On Friday in class we learned about slope intercept form which is y=mx+b, and the other one was point slope form which s y-y1=m(x-x). It is important to know these because they help you graph your functions. The x-intercept is when the line crosses or passes through the X axis and the y-intercept is when Y crosses through the y axis.

  6. To find the slope of a graph you have to use a certain formula ( the change in x over the change in y). In class Friday we went over two equations, slope intercept form [y=mx+b] and point slope form [y-y1=m(x-x)]. Yes it's important because slope helps you solve your equation. X intercept means where the line crosses the x axis and y intercept is when the line crosses the y axis.

  7. You determine the slope of a graph by finding 2 points that lie on the graph. Think rise over run. Slope of a ratio between the change in y over the change in x. The slope is written as rise over run (rise/run). Move your finger up, and rise is positive. Mover your finger down, and rise is negative. Move your finger to the right, and run is positive. Move your finger to left, and run is negative. The formula for finding the slope of a line is y2-y1 over x2-x1=m (y2-y1/x2-x1=m), and m is the variable used for the slope. We learned point slope form and slope intercept form. Point slope refers to a method for graphing a linear equation on an x-y axis. When graphing a linear equation, the whole idea is to take pairs of x's and y's and plot them on the graph. While you could plot several points by just plugging in values of x, the point-slope form makes the whole process simpler. Point-slope form is also used to take a graph and find the equeation of that particular line. Understanding slope when using those forms are very important because it is the "key" to solve those equations to finding your points. The graphical concept of x- and y-intercepts is pretty simple. The x-intercepts are where the graph crosses the x-axis, nad the y-intercepts are where the graph crosses the y-axis. the problems start when we try to deal with intercepts algebraically. Algebraically, an x-intercept is a point on the graph where y is zero and a y-intercept is a point on the graph where x is zero. Specifically, an x-intercept is a point in the equation where the y-value is zero, and y-intercept is a point in the equation where the x-value is zero.
