Discussion Question 4

ASA Everyone!

So,

Today we went over proportions. Define the word proportion(mathematics term).
Suppose it takes 48 slices of bean pie to feed Mr. Muhammad's 4th grade class of 20 students. How many slices of bean pie would be needed for 30 students?

Hint: make a proportion!

  1. The definition of a proportion is to compare different ratios. The proportion in this word problem would be 48/20=x/30. So, this would be 48(30)=20x. 1440=20x. x=72.

  2. Proportion- compare 2 ratios/comparison/equation stating that 2 ratios are equal.
    48/20=30/x
    (48)(x) (30)(20)
    48x/48=600/48
    X=12.50
    12.5 slices of bean pie

    1. Sorry for my first answer. This is the correct one

      48/20 =x/30

      (48)(30) = 20x

      1440 = 20x

      X = 72
      72 slices of bean pie would be needed for 30 students

  3. 1.6 slices of bean pie will be enough for 30 students because 1.6 times 30=48 slices of bean pie

  4. A proportion is a name you would give to a statement that two ratios are equal. It can be written in two ways: a/b = c/d or a:b = c/d. When two ratios are equal, then the cross products of the ratios are equal.

    For this problem: Since there are 48 slices of bean pie for 20 students, then how many slices of bean pie would be needed for 30 students?

    48/20 =30/x -------> ratios
    Crossed multiplication

    48x= (30)(20)

    48x = 600

    X = 12.5
    12.5 slices of bean pie would be needed for 30 students.

  5. A proportion is when your compare two ratios to show that they are equal.

    48/20= x/30

    20x=1440

    X= 72

    72 slices will feed 30 people

  6. Prooertions-compare of 2 ratios, equation stating that 2 ratios are equal.

    20/48=30/x

    (20)(x)=(48)(30)

    20x=1440

    20x=1440
    20 20

    x=72

  7. The question is proportions so you are going to use
    48/20 and x/30 and you are going to use cross multiplication 48*30=1400 then you divide 1400 by 20 and you get 72 x=72,sorry for my mistake on the problem the first time

  9. Proportion = comparison of 2 ratios; comparison/equation stating that 2 ratios are equal. ex: 3/4 = 9/12

    First you figure out the equation: 48/20 =x/30 and then you cross multiply: (48)(30) = 20x Next you, Divide 20 by both sides: 1440 = 20x and now you just find out what x is: X = 72.....YAAAY!!

    Mr.Muhammad would need 72 slices of bean pie for 30 students

  10. Proportion- a comparison of two ratios

    48/20 = x/30
    48x30=20x
    1,440=20x
    x=72 (72 slices)

  11. A proportion is a name you would give to a statement that two ratios are equal.

    Write it out:
    48/20 = x/30

    Cross multiply:
    48x30=20x

    Multiply left side:
    1440=20x

    Divide both sides by 20:
    x=72 (72 slices)
